Refilling Our Packs: A German Twist on Career Development

In career development, we often ask the question, “What’s in your pack?” It’s a powerful metaphor to help clients reflect on their strengths, skills, and resources. But as practitioners, how often do we take the time to refill our packs?

This weekend, I’m hosting Fuddle on the Rhine, a professional development weekend for career practitioners from Australia, Germany, and the UK. As part of this unique event, I’ll be gifting each participant a Schultüte—a tradition rooted in German culture.

What is a Schultüte?

The Schultüte (pronounced “shool-too-tuh”) is a cone filled with treats and supplies given to children in Germany on their first day of school. It’s a symbol of new beginnings, excitement, and the tools needed for a fresh chapter.

For our event, I’ve reimagined this tradition to reflect the spirit of career development. Each Schultüte will be filled with resources, prompts, and creative tools that participants can use in their own practice. It’s my way of honouring the German setting of our weekend while providing something meaningful and fun for everyone to take home.

Why Refilling Matters

As career development practitioners, we’re often focused on supporting others—clients, teams, and colleagues. Events like Fuddle on the Rhine offer a chance to step back, connect with peers, and gather inspiration.

This weekend will include workshops on creative engagement strategies, a Rhine river cruise, and plenty of opportunities to explore the vibrant culture of Cologne. The Schultüte is just one part of the experience, designed to spark curiosity and remind us of the joy in learning and sharing.

So, I’ll ask you the same question I’ll pose to our participants: What’s in your pack? And when was the last time you refilled it?

How do you nurture your professional growth and creativity?
