Have you ever been somewhere that feels like it understands you? A place where the distractions of life fade, and you reconnect with your truest self? Dr. Spencer Niles describes these as soul places—locations that resonate deeply, offering renewal, reflection, and clarity.
For me, two soul places stand out, each with its own gifts for my journey:
Cologne, Germany: A Source of Inspiration

There’s something magical about being able to sit and relax by the Rhine or like right now, admiring the majestic sight of the Dom’s (cathedral) spires and also admiring the view of city skyline, from the “other side” of the river perspective. These moments fill me with creativity and confidence, revitalising my sense of purpose.
Cologne, for me, sparks ideas for creating resources and new approaches to support others. It’s a city that reminds me of my goals and leaves me feeling content and inspired.
It is my happy place, and it helps me recharge my batteries while filling up my happiness cup.
It’s where I truly feel at home 🏡… afterall they do say home is where the heart is ❤️
The Isle of Skye, Scotland: A Place of Healing

In contrast, the Isle of Skye, Scotland offers healing.
Its rugged beauty invites reflection and renewal. Maybe it has to do with my Scottish heritage – it’s where I go when life feels heavy and my heart needs mending. Skye helps me let go of what weighs me down, find myself again, and move forward with strength. I’m looking forward to the time I can return to Skye – I’ve been away from there for too long.
My first trip to Skye was over the new year period of 2003/2004 as part of the Haggis Backpackers Tour – imagine your first visit to Scotland was on board a little blue mini bus 😊
The Career Connection
Exploring soul places aligns beautifully with the Hope Action Theory competencies of self-reflection and self-clarity.
When we pause to identify the environments that inspire or heal us, we gain insight into who we are and what we need to thrive. This awareness is invaluable for career development—it helps us align our choices with our values and goals.
Whether it’s the creative energy of Cologne or the quiet resilience of Skye, my soul places remind me of my purpose and potential.
If you’re seeking direction, consider this: Where is your soul place? How might it help you reflect, recharge, or rediscover your path?
