🍪 Back to Basics – A Ginger Nut, a Memory, and a Mindful Moment

Yesterday, I took a needed break from screen time, and the brainstorming of the outline for a chapter of a book, I’ve been invited to contribute to – thank you to the person for thinking of me (my heart lifted up, when I woke to see your email yesterday morning)🙏💚

So how did I take a break?

I baked a batch of ginger nut biscuits—nothing fancy, just a simple, comforting recipe from one of my mum’s old cookbooks. This cookbook has travelled with me over the years, from one home to another, and it always brings a sense of continuity and grounding.

I followed the recipe just as it was written, using no modern appliances—just my hands, time, and patience.

There was something deeply satisfying about rubbing the butter into the flour by hand. It took longer, yes, but in that moment, I felt my muscles in motion, smelled the rich scents of ginger and cinnamon, and experienced a kind of mindfulness that technology often rushes us past I moulded each biscuit with care, thinking of the generations before me who did the same.

As the biscuits baked, the smell wafting through the house transported me back to my grandma’s kitchen—a warm, love-filled space where, as a young child, I’d sit and chat while she baked. That memory wrapped around me like a hug. ❤️

When I enjoyed the biscuits later for my Kaffee und Kuchen moment, I served them on a plate that once belonged in my grandma’s kitchen. It felt right. It felt connected.

It made me reflect on how sometimes, slowing down and going back to basics can be just as effective—if not more—than chasing the next innovation.

In a world that moves fast, maybe it’s worth remembering: there’s value in simplicity, in tradition, in doing things by hand.

What’s something “basic” you’ve returned to lately—and how did it make you feel? – Maybe it is a process at work, or using a tool or technique you haven’t used in a while
