Why listen to a gnome?
I’m a qualified Career Development Practitioner, who my COVID-19 lockdown buddy agreed with friends in their description of me: all of 5ft tall, quirky, did my best to be cheerful, and be helpful and cheer others, resourceful/problem solver, also marching to the beat of my own drum, with a slightly mischievous / twinkle in my eye streak. They also came to see through my conversations with other career practitioners, how passionate and caring people can be for helping others. All of this they say are qualities of a gnome . . .
As a former military spouse having lived and worked in 3 different countries, I gave up my teaching career to follow my former husband’s military career, struggling how to describe my paid and unpaid skills and experiences on my resume, with the need to experience several career pivots. I have also experienced redundancy and been the sole income provider whilst not having a secure income. Although we all have different experiences, I can appreciate from first hand experiences, some of the challenges you may be facing. You can find more of my background on my ‘About me’ page.

While gnomes are mythical creatures, often associated with Germany (have you heard of the Gnomes of Cologne story?) and don’t have a direct impact on career development, we can draw inspiration from their characteristics and apply them to our own professional journeys. If we imagine gnomes in the context of being career development practitioners, we can attribute certain qualities to them that can be beneficial in this role. Here are some qualities commonly associated with gnomes that can be beneficial in career development:
1. Wisdom: Gnomes are often seen as wise creatures. As a career development practitioner, possessing a deep understanding of career paths, industry trends, and strategies for professional growth is essential. Providing guidance and valuable insights to clients or individuals seeking career advice is a crucial aspect of the role.
In career development, wisdom can be equated with making informed decisions, seeking advice from experienced individuals, and continuously learning from both successes and failures. Cultivating wisdom helps in making sound career choices and navigating various challenges.
2. Attention to Detail: Gnomes are known for their meticulousness and attention to detail. This quality can be valuable in career development, as it helps in maintaining high standards of work, delivering quality outcomes, and paying attention to important details that others might overlook.
In the career development field, paying close attention to the specific needs, goals, and circumstances of each individual client is vital. By carefully assessing their skills, interests, and values, career practitioners can tailor their guidance and recommendations accordingly.
3. Craftsmanship: Gnomes are skilled craftsmen. In a career context, craftsmanship translates into developing expertise in your chosen field and honing your skills. By continuously refining your craft, you become an asset in your profession and increase your chances of success.
Similarly, career development practitioners strive to develop expertise in their field. They continually update their knowledge of career-related topics, such as wellbeing, job market trends, resume writing, interviewing techniques, and professional branding. This expertise allows them to provide valuable insights and support to their clients.
4. Playfulness and Creativity: Gnomes often embody a sense of playfulness and creativity. Applying these qualities to career development can foster innovation, out-of-the-box thinking, and the ability to come up with unique solutions to problems. Embracing a playful and creative mindset can lead to new opportunities and breakthroughs in your career.
5. Connection to Nature and Empathy: Gnomes have a strong connection to nature and the environment. In career development, this can be interpreted as staying connected to your roots, values, and passions. By aligning your career choices with your core values and interests, you can find greater fulfillment and satisfaction in your work.
As career development practitioners, cultivating a genuine connection and empathy towards clients is crucial. By understanding their aspirations, challenges, and personal circumstances, practitioners can provide empathetic support and create a safe space for clients to explore and navigate their career paths.
6. Resilience: Gnomes are resilient creatures that can withstand challenges and setbacks. Resilience is crucial in career development as it allows you to bounce back from failures, adapt to changes, and persevere in the face of obstacles. Developing resilience helps you navigate the ups and downs of your professional journey.
7. Adaptability and Flexibility: Gnomes are known for their adaptability, as they can adapt to various environments and situations. In the dynamic field of career development, being adaptable and flexible is essential. Career practitioners must stay updated with evolving job market trends, changing industry landscapes, and emerging career paths. This allows them to provide relevant and up-to-date guidance to clients.
8. Problem Solving: Gnomes often encounter and solve problems in folklore and mythology. Career development practitioners similarly need strong problem-solving skills. They help clients identify obstacles, explore solutions, and develop strategies to overcome challenges in their career journeys. This involves analysing situations, brainstorming options, and empowering clients towards effective independent decision-making.
