ANZAC DAY – Lest We Forget

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we shall remember them.

Lest we forget.

ANZAC Day for me is a time not only to remember those from Australia and New Zealand, but also from multiple countries who have served in previous and current conflicts; their sacrifice, and those who returned home (and for some whose physical and hidden struggles continue), but also a time to reflect and learn from the past for a more unified, tolerant and peaceful tomorrow.

I’ll always remember the lesson learnt from my grandfather, a British soldier during WWII, who struck up a semi kind of friendship with a German POW whilst escorting them to Cairo.

Grandpa was a truly humble and kind-hearted person who always looked for the best in humanity

They discovered that they both had a young child about the same age, and shared interests of soccer and gardening. They met again by chance about 20 yrs later after both immigrating with their families to Australia, and all those years later, ended up working at the same company.

They re-established their friendship first formed on the battlefront, and maintained a close friendship for the rest of their lives.

Gone but never forgotten Grandpa. Lest we forget x
